I’ll be posting stuff daily from here on out and actually live up to the name of this blog. But first here’s a ramble about color.
I’ve never understood color, or how to use it. Especially with the fact that I painted this in oils, scanned it in and the scanner dulled the colors so I had to saturate it again, and now you’re looking at it through a monitor that will even further alter the color in some way or another. It’s just like googling a famous painting, and every image that comes up will have the painting in different hues. Which is the right one?
I guess all we can really do is look it up in a book, and even then the printing of that book could be slightly off. So the only way to view the colors of a painting would have to be in person. But that is usually never the case.
I’ve always accepted that no matter what colors I put down, it will be altered at some point or another. Whether by the very monitors we look at every day, or how even though you and your friend will be looking at the image, you’ll be seeing different colors.
So as I stared at this model’s face (sorry Sara), I really tried to look for the colors that I saw there. My teacher Marjan really opened up my eyes to the colors I used to just gloss over every day. The blues and greens in the shadows of the face for instance.
Creating color is hard too. I’ve only really used photoshop when doing heavily colored pieces, but sitting there and mixing red, blue, and yellow to get the colors I see on the model’s face was so hard. I wish I could’ve gone on to finish this painting, as with oil I was trying to build up the colors, and do layers of translucency and transparency.
That’s another thing I learned from Marjan, along with always hearing her say “You can make any color from red, yellow, and blue”, to her talking about how skin is translucent and transparent. In order to create a lifelike painting, use transparency and translucency. Where as before I would just use the purest of color so that there was no transparency and just have no room to keep building on top of it. Also not using white, which was hard.
Okay for real this time.
My film is done and will be uploaded soon! So now I’m starting my daily postings. At the start of every week I’ll choose a topic like, trees, or ocean, or do a movie study. So for that week I’ll have seven drawings that correspond with the theme chosen at the beginning of the week.
But since it’s Thursday I’ll just ride out til Monday by posting some stuff I’ve already done.
